As humans, we tend to quickly cling to our separateness. The ego mind sets us apart and defines us as an individual. We like to think we’re fully in control of ourselves. The truth is that we are intertwined with nature on a biological and energetic level. The lunar cycle is a beautiful case study of how our personal flow of energy can be affected by the power of nature.
The Moon regulates the ocean tides. One of the most powerful forces of nature on the planet ebbs and flows with the cycle of the moon. Considering our human bodies are 60% water on average, it should be no surprise that a celestial body that influences a body of water such as the ocean also influences us.
The lunar cycle can be broken down into 4 primary phases which correspond to cycle seasons: New, First Quarter, Full, and Third Quarter.
The New Moon is considered Winter. This is a time of beginnings. Much like the vibes of the Winter season, you might find yourself needing a little extra rest as the Moon goes dark in the sky. Perhaps you’ll notice a tendency towards introversion and isolation. Set aside time during this phase to reflect, go inward, and check in with intentions you’ve set.
First Quarter Moon
The First Quarter Moon aligns with the season of Spring. As the ambient energies increase, you may feel a desire for community and connection. After the inward season of Winter, the First Quarter Moon radiates an energy of renewal and stability. This is an ideal time to host an intimate gathering for bonding with your closest friends or going out on the town to enjoy a social happy hour. As you go outside yourself for nourishment in this season, the irony you’ll discover is “as without, so within.”
The Full Moon is represented by the season of Summer. This is the peak energy of the lunar cycle, and you’ll feel the zing in the air if you tune in and allow it to flow. As during Summertime, the Full Moon is an expression of radiance and vitality. Don’t be surprised if you get the urge to hit the gym or clean the house. Lean into it and get active! Watch your intentions spring to life with the expanding energy of this time.
Third Quarter Moon
The Third Quarter Moon resonates with the season of Autumn. During this season, you may crave cleansing and releasing. Much like nature lets go of the old to prepare for the new in Autumn, this is a time for you to explore your emotions, discover new avenues of healing, and release that which no longer serves you. Action is no longer required as the energy wanes. Be gentle with yourself and what comes up for you during this time.
Keeping Moon Rituals
To stay in tune with the flow of energy and how I’m feeling as the Moon changes phases, I love setting aside time with each major phase change to do a Moon Ritual. You can make this time whatever you like for yourself, as your energetic connections are deeply personal. Some great options for your Moon Ritual include doing a clearing, setting out some crystals, praying, reading cards, meditating, and journaling.
